HEIC vs JPG
Updated 19 October 2026
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple’s default for many iPhone photos. JPG/JPEG is the universal still-image format for the web, email, and most Windows apps. This page explains the trade-offs — and when a free, no-upload HEIC→JPG conversion is the right move.
Side-by-side
| HEIC | JPG (JPEG) | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical size | Smaller for similar visual quality | Larger at the same quality setting |
| Quality | Excellent on modern Apple pipelines | Excellent; ubiquitous encoder support |
| Windows | Often needs a codec or conversion | Opens everywhere |
| Android / web forms | Hit-or-miss | Expected format |
| Email / print shops | Frequently rejected or blank | Safe default |
| Live Photo / bursts | Can store more than one image | Single frame |
| Best for | Keeping originals on Apple devices | Sharing outside the Apple ecosystem |
What is HEIC?
HEIC is a container (often using HEVC compression) that stores high-quality photos in less disk space than JPEG. iPhones adopted it to stretch storage. On a Mac or iPhone it feels invisible. On a PC without codecs — or inside a web upload that only accepts .jpg — it becomes a friction point. More context: iPhone HEIC to JPG.
What is JPG?
JPEG has been the default photo format for decades. Almost every app, CMS, and printer pipeline understands it. Re-encoding to JPEG may discard some HEIC-only features (and, with HeicLocal, EXIF/GPS is intentionally not copied for privacy).
When you should convert HEIC → JPG
- Windows Explorer or Office won’t open the file.
- A form, email client, or chat app rejects
.heic. - You are sending photos to someone on Android or an older device.
- You need a simple single-frame still (not Live Photo video).
When you can keep HEIC: staying inside Apple Photos / iCloud, or editing on a Mac that already opens HEIC natively. Mac tip: Preview export vs browser batch.
Privacy: where conversion happens
Many “online converters” upload your camera roll to a server (Convertio, CloudConvert, FreeConvert, and similar). That is fine for non-sensitive snapshots if you accept the trade-off. For faces, documents, or anything you would not email to a stranger, prefer browser-local conversion. HeicLocal runs HEIC→JPG in your tab — verify with DevTools → Network (no image POST). Quality tips when converting
- Use a high JPEG quality (HeicLocal defaults to High / 0.92) for sharing; drop to Good for smaller email attachments.
- Batch many files once, then Download ZIP — see batch HEIC to JPG.
- Live Photos / multi-frame HEIC may only export the first frame in a simple converter.
FAQ
Is HEIC better than JPG?
HEIC usually saves space at similar quality on Apple devices. JPG wins on compatibility. Convert when the destination expects JPEG.
Does converting lose quality?
Any re-encode can change detail. Starting from a high-quality HEIC and using a high JPEG quality setting keeps results looking sharp for everyday sharing.
Can I convert without uploading?
Yes. Open HeicLocal, drop files, download JPG/ZIP. Nothing is uploaded for conversion.
